“Lather Man” Strikes in South Windsor, Connecticut

By James H. Hyde

There’s a new attraction in South Windsor, Connecticut. You won’t find it in any attractions brochure or on a site-seeing map, and it’ll be in town for only a day or two, but if you’re a suds fan, you might want to visit the Evergreen Walk area of town as soon as possible.

According to Connecticut’s Channel 3 News Web site, a police officer patrolling near an LL Bean outlet at Evergreen Walk was surprised by the spectacle of suds spewing from a fountain and sending them all over the area, where they appear as snowy patches on the grass and picnic tables.

It turns out that someone put laundry detergent in the fountain and brought some ersatz white stuff early this year. Whether the perpetrator was impatient for snow or just responding to a peer-motivated dare isn’t known, but the police are hot on his or her trail. Time to put the Batman signal up. There’s a new evildoer in town who doubtless will name himself “Lather Man.”

While this incident is hardly a new sally into the realm of mischief—years ago, someone put detergent in the fountain outside the tony Plaza Hotel in New York City–it is a pain in the neck for those who have to deal with it. The fountain must be drained and fully cleaned before it’s functional again. So Evergreen Walk employees will be spending today dispensing a copious amount of elbow grease and “Suds Away” to eliminate the frothy display.

If you’re particularly into suds, you need to get to South Windsor ASAP, although not to worry if you miss it. We’ll keep an eye out for Lather Man and let you know if the detergent-dumper strikes again. “Holy bubbles, Batman!”
