Weekend New England Snowstorm Likely to Drive People to Online Buying

snow storm new england ImageIt’s bad enough that the economy is down, and people were not exactly clambering to the malls or shopping centers this year anyway.

But in the final Christmas weekend when retailers were hoping to recover something from the weak sales experienced so far, New England is hit with its first major snow storm of 2008.

It’s been snowing where I am located since early Friday afternoon, and as I write this post the white stuff is still falling and not expected to stop until early evening. Today is the shortest day in the northern hemisphere, and for many retailers it’s probably seemed like their longest day waiting for customers to walk through the doors.

But this kind of weather is a boom for online retailers. Why dust of the snow on your car, plow your driveway, and drive through blizzard conditions to get to a mall with no parking spaces and in frigid weather, when you can do it all from the comfort of your own Internet connection and in your pajamas at 11:0pm at night?

This year a lot of the online sites are saying we can get it delivered to you in time for Christmas with 2-day delivery. I know I’ve done a lot of my shopping this year that way.

As I mentioned in a previous post I got my toy stuff sorted out with the purchase of the Kidizoom Digital Camera and Leapfrog Musical Table from online stores, and today I’ve gone book searching at Amazon, and some technical gadgets at Newegg.

Yes, it’s nice to walk out of a door with the purchase to know it’s all complete but this year waiting a few days to get the stuff is preferable to battling through a foot of snow to find there’s none left of that I want anyway.

Wherever you are I hope you’re safe and warm.

I do hope to welcome more Americans in Amsterdam in 2009 than in 2008. But who knows how the EUR/USD will develop over the next year. But in the meantime I have experienced in the past years that when winterstorms hit the US, the number of bookings for my apartments in Amsterdam goes up a lot.

I believe in 30 years malls won’t even exist, and everyone will buy online, because it’s much more convenient. And I can’t wait to see that day – it’s progress
