IBM Layoffs Another Blow to Vermont’s Economy?
By James H. Hyde
IBM, which has announced that the company is considering another round of layoffs, but not how many, is about to send a Valentine’s Day card to its workforce and the State of Vermont, but it won’t be signed, “Love, IBM.”
Various news organizations, politicians and IBM employees have been living in dreadful anticipation awaiting the exact number. Rumors have it that it may be as high as 100 to 200, unpleasant numbers to be sure, but numbers the state can handle.
But NewEnglandTimes.Com has learned exclusively that the number may be far higher. According to several sources at IBM, who asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to speak to the press, IBM plans to let go 500 or more employees in Vermont. The source also indicated that as many as 700 will be laid off in Armonk, NY, Westchester County, where IBM is headquartered.
In addition, Bloomberg.com reports that the company may be laying off as many as 16,000 company-wide.
The impact on Vermont’s economy, as well as Wall Street, could be significant when the announcement is made public. The entire story about the how this may affect Vermont’s economy can be read on http://www.newenglandtimes.com.
