I've been writing about New England covering shopping, gifts and events from the region. I grew up in Boston and haven't ventured too far but like many of the writers here love to travel in New England. Expect me to occasionally slip in some of my favorite destinations and attractions as well, and write about news and events.

The Last Ice Safari Day at Roger Williams Park Zoo Cool to See

Roger Williams Zoo Logo ImageThe Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island, is always looking to guarantee its visitors something special every time they visit.

And this summer they’ve continued the tradition with the hosting of three “Ice Safari Days,” where visitors can watch as select animals receive some professionally sculpted icy treats.

The last of these days is scheduled for August 20th, 2009 and more details about the event follow.

“Each visit to the Zoo already offers a unique experience, just in watching the different behaviors of the animals,” says Zoo Director Jack Mulvena.  “But our new schedule of daily programming and our Ice Safari Days are a way of further entertaining and educating our visitors through a variety of special, interactive activities.  Not only does this guarantee that they can enjoy something different every time they visit, it helps to further connect them to the environmental and conservation messages we’re trying to instill.”

During the Ice Safari Days, visitors can watch as professional carvers from Art in Ice create wildlife-inspired ice sculptures.  The sculptures will then be filled with treats and given to select animals as their enrichment for the day, providing yet another novel sight for visitors, who can watch as the animals partake in their special summer treat.

On August 20, carving will happen near the gibbon exhibit from 9 to 11 a.m., with the gibbons receiving their icy treat at 11:30 a.m.

For those who can’t make it to the Zoo on Ice Safari Days, the Zoo has still got plenty in store, with a brand new line-up of daily programming.  Through Labor Day, each day at the Zoo will feature a different schedule of activities: storytimes with the Zoo’s resident performance group, The Wild Bunch; Animal Tales, where Zoo docents share fun facts about a particular animal and their exhibit; Creature Features, where The Wild Bunch narrates an animal enrichment demonstration or feeding;  Nature Tales, talks focused on the natural world from animals to the environment;  and Education Stations where visitors can learn more through interactive displays and activities.

The Ice Safari Days and all of the daily programming are free with regular Zoo admission.  For a detailed daily schedule, visit www.rwpzoo.org.  Regular admission to the Zoo is $12 for adults, $6 for children (ages 3 – 12) and $8 for seniors (ages 62+); Zoo members and children under 3 get in free.

The Roger Williams Park Zoo is one of my favorite places to take my visitors to New England, and is yet another reason to include the city of Providence when planning a Rhode Island Vacation.
