Eastern Equine Encephalitis Claims 125 pheasants, 14 Horses in Maine

WMTW is reporting that Maine health officials have tapped Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) as the cause of the demise of 125 pheasants in York County, Maine. In addition, WMTW says that the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (MCDCP) is investigating another private flock, and testing for the disease. So far 14 horses have succumbed to EEE in Maine.

While Dora Mills of the MCDCP says that there is no threat to humans from the infected animals, mosquitoes do carry EEE, and if humans are bitten by mosquitoes carrying the disease, they can suffer neurological damage, which, in the worst cases can cause seizures and death.

Despite the lateness of the season, if you go outdoors, particularly at dusk, wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants, and use products that keep mosquitoes away.
