I live in New England and have strong opinions about places. I love the wilderness, hiking, lakes and hate cities. So Cliff wants my focus to be outdoors and out of the ordinary and talk straight. Suits me. Looking forward to some good feedback and comments on my posts. I'm also setting my own blog up at the moment which I'll let you know when it's ready for public consumption. See you soon, Yankee Traveler

Getaway to South County Rhode Island and Enjoy the Quiet life

Point Judith Lighthouse ImageTired of the same old destinations for Getaways in New England? Ready to try something new? Consider South County in Rhode Island.

This area passes muster with me as an ideal location for a getaway in Rhode Island. It’s not overcrowded, and as many of you know I avoid cities and popular destinations like the plague these days. Now its true South County beaches can be overrun in the summer but you’ll not catch me at a beach during the summer anyway.

I prefer my beach time to be in the fall and even winter – you’ve guessed I’m there for other reasons than sun worshipping haven’t you?

But I’m digressing. South County is much more than a string of Rhode Island beaches.

There’s a wonderful array of villages to visit such as Wickford and Wakefield, East and West Greenwich, Richmond, Exeter, Hopkinton, Coventry and of course North and South Kingstown.

These towns and their surround lands offer up antique browsing, wildlife destinations on ponds and fields in refuge and sanctuary areas, a few gorgeous lighthouses, boating and fishing, and some of the best lodging opportunities this side of the cape.

Are you getting stirred yet?

Can you smell the salt air or feel the sand beneath your feet in this naturally beautiful area? No? Well maybe I just haven’t hit the right chord with an activity yet. As the “in your face” salesmen say – but wait there’s more…

Maybe you’re into Broadway shows, or museums and art, or even swinging an iron on a well-manicured golf course? And of course how about dining on fresh seafood in a peaceful and relaxed setting far removed from hectic Saturday lunchtime in Quincy market?

Money Magazine identified the area as “One of the 12 best places to vacation in North America.” Given they tend to recommend destinations offering good value for money, if a budget getaway is on your mind then South County may be just the ticket for you.

So if you want to know more about this destination and where to go and stay then you’ll be pleased to know we just added this location to our main website. Check out our new Romantic Getaways in Rhode Island section here.

I love surprises and this is one destination that’ll surprise you with its variety and friendly inviting nature – you can hear yourself think in South County. But me, I prefer not to think too much when I’m on vacation and just soak up the warmth of just being wherever I am.

South County does have nice beaches, and if you feel like taking a day trip to Block Island the ferry leaves from Point Judith – but take your bike because its one of the best ways of seeing the island.
