Newport RI – Discover This New England Vacation

Newport RI is a favorite destination spot for people on a New England vacation.

Located on the eastern side of Narragansett Bay it’s known as the yachting capital of America because of its long standing links to the America’s Cup races.

But Newport RI is much more than just a place for sailing enthusiasts and yacht lovers, and I can say that as someone who doesn’t sail, or have much of an interest in yacht racing. But I do love the ocean. And Newport RI is about the ocean.

I don’t know about you but my family and I have our traditions – some people might describe them as rituals. So whenever we visit Newport RI we arrive with a set agenda of things to do.

Our boys love to fly their kites and have a picnic at Brenton State Park. The park is mid-way through the ten-mile Ocean Drive. This is a magnificent drive around a rocky peninsular – although it’s flat enough to bicycle if you want. At the park you’ll find tables with small open B-B-Q pits.

Just bring your own charcoal, hamburgers, and appetite. Arrive early to get a B-B-Q!

After we’ve had our fill of recreation we head back into town along the sweeping ocean and harbor views.

Our oldest son loves to take a harbor cruise and see the sites of Newport RI from the ocean. The cruise we take is the Spirit of Newport. You’ll see staggering homes, a wonderful view of Newport Bridge, and smuggler’s coves… just to mention a few delights.

The downtown area is a place to walk and discover. Parking can be expensive but we’ve found the best rates are available at the Newport Transportation Center garage. It’s just a few minutes walk into the Harbor area or Brick Market if you’re souvenir hunting.

We enjoy walking around the wharf areas and visiting many of the specialty shops. Well, okay my wife and I enjoy it – our three sons are not thrilled unless it involves buying a kite or an ice cream to finish the day.

Over the years we’ve seen and done most things in Newport RI. These include, visiting the Newport Mansions, the Cliff Walk, Fort Adams State Park, and The International Tennis Hall of Fame. You can learn more about these destinations by visiting the Newport RI page at the New England vacations guide site.

Newport RI has a number of great beaches, some on Ocean drive and one at the beginning and end of The Cliff Walk. But Rhode Island has a number of safe swimming beaches and I’m compiling this information for a new Blog post soon.

So watch this space or Blog for more news…

Have fun at your special day in Newport RI.
