Boston Harbor Islands – Baseball Georges Island Style…

Georges Island Boston Massachusetts ImagePlunked smack in the middle of Boston Harbor are 34 islands that most people don’t even know exist. And what’s more… most people don’t even know they can visit many of them, or how to get there.

Boston Harbor Islands includes a number of islands controlled by the National Park Services. One of these gems in the harbor is Georges Island, and it has a couple of events coming up in late August I wanted to tell you about today.

But first I want you to know you can get to Georges Island easy enough by a harbor cruise ship from Boston’s Long Wharf near the New England Aquarium.

Hopping on the Harbor Cruise ships allows you to visit many of the islands to observe the unique aspects of each one. They make for a wonderful family day out, and with summer rapidly coming to an end it would be worth taking the cruise boat out to Georges Island for these events…

August 20 & 21 – It’s Easy Being Green:

Come aboard a Boston Harbor Island cruise to get a close-up look at the Hull wind turbine. The sleek kinetic structure generates energy to power local homes.

Meet members of the Boston Harbor Island Green Committee and learn more about their clean energy initiatives. See the photovoltaic panels that catch the suns rays and power the Island’s electric vehicles. Make and take home a wind mobile, which can harness the clean energy of the Boston Harbor Island wind.

See exhibits and performances by the WGBH Zoom Kids, the Museum of Science, and Catch the Science Bug, and learn about Green Energy Initiatives throughout Massachusetts.

August 27 & 28 - Baseball Time Travelers:

Step back in time for a World Series game at Fort Warren. Saturday see an 1880’s traditional overhand style vintage baseball game when the Providence Grays play the Simsbury Taverneers.

Sunday, return to the Island for an 1860’s underhand one-bounce style vintage baseball game. Baseball historians will be on hand to call the game, sign autographs and test the fans b-ball trivia knowledge.

Both these events are part of the summer Family Fun Days series, which are winding down and this may be your last chance to experience Georges Island before the end of the season.
